Happy Labor Day/Why We Work

Today is Labor Day in the United States.  For our international readers, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the achievements of American workers.  It was founded during the Industrial Revolution, a time when the average American worked 12-hours per day, seven days per week, in an effort to eke out a basic living.  During those days there were minimal (if any) labor laws, factories were comprised of immigrants, and children as young as six years old often toiled beside grown men under dangerous working conditions.

Things have obviously improved since the 1800s however, we still - most of us at least - appreciate the value of hard work.

But what does it mean to actually work these days?  Why do we do it?  Why do we trade our services for remuneration?

The most obvious answer would be survival.  To put food on the table for our families.  It might also be for personal fulfillment or a sense of identity.  For others, it might be just to pass the time.  There is a Greek proverb that says, "Work is not a disgrace.  The disgrace is idleness."

I always like to refer to management guru, Peter Drucker, for his take on work.  Drucker wrote:

"Work, we know, is both a burden and a need, both a curse and a blessing.  Unemployment we long ago learned creates severe psychological disturbances, not because of economic deprivation, but primarily because it undermines self-respect.  Work is an extension of the personality.  It is an achievement.  It is one of the ways in which a person defines himself or herself, measures his worth, and his humanity."

I never believed that your self-respect should be tied to your job title.  No matter what your job, as long as you put in the effort, take pride in what you are doing, and deliver a quality result, your title means very little.  I think we've placed too much emphasis on titles, rather on the ability to actually perform.  Luckily, we still live in a society where those who work hard (very hard), will eventually be compensated for their efforts.  For as the old saying goes, the man who rolls up his shirt sleeves is rarely in danger of losing his shirt.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day!
